#PaleBlueDot – Pale Blue Dot

What IS #PaleBlueDot?

  1. Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of planet Earth taken on February 14, 1990, by the Voyager 1 space probe from a record distance of about 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles, 40.5 AU), as part of the Family Portrait series of images of the Solar System.”1
  2. It’s a book (EXCELLENT book BTW). “Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space is a 1994 book by Carl Sagan.”2
  3. It’s home.
  4. It’s US !!!
  5. It’s all we have,,,
    and more likely than not,,,
it’s all we are GOING to have.

Have a listen to Carl Sagan3 in the short film just below,,, he says it all better than anyone.

From this distant vantage point, the earth might not seem of any particular interest.
But for us, it’s different.
Consider again that dot.
That’s here, that’s home, that’s us.
On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there–on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.

— Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994

Note: I saw this film on YouTube. I had nothing to do in creating it, and in fact I don’t know who did create it. I DO think it’s really well done. The YouTube member that has the film (though he also mentions he had no part in making it) is Patrick Mylund Nielsen

So,,, what's all this Pale Blue Dot stuff about???

So,,, what’s all this Pale Blue Dot (PBD) stuff about???
Well, as far as I am concerned, the underlying thoughts of the PBD are about as far down to the “bedrock” of wondering what everything is all about that my feeble, simple mind is able, or at least willing, to explore.
The PBD is more than just the planet, and/or the environment. It’s everything, including US. The PBD is a “system”. We are part of the system, not the end all and be all of the system.
As much as I am amazed with “Star Trek” thoughts of space travel, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever be able to accomplish THAT much science fiction. From “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed” to the most immediate and realistic plans to venture back to the Moon and further to Mars, it will be generations before any realistic inhabitation of these bodies occurs,,, if ever.
The point is, this PBD is probably all we’re going to have,,, SO:

  1. Seems to me, the more “advanced” WE get, the more we’re screwing up the PBD,,, the “system”.
  2. The consequences of our actions, good and bad, right or wrong,,, are becoming more significant, severe and potentially irreversible.
  3. Technology may be advancing faster than we are able to cope with.
  4. Our “mechanisms”, such as legislatures, that are meant to deal with such issues, are antiquated, increasingly ineffectual and already decades behind.
  5. The tail seems to be wagging the dog. (the PBD is the dog).

What to do???
I haven’t got the faintest freaking idea, short of, first recognizing the reality that “issues” exist that are threatening our PBD,,,
,,,so me,,, I shoot photographs and make ads.
Therefore, I have decided to create my own personal PSA campaign (PSA=Public Service Ad). It occurred to me, how cool it is that I can “run” this campaign on and from my own website.
I have ambitious plans for this body of work and plan to do many more PBD PSA/Photographs (hopefully). In fact I have several more in production now,,, takes SO dang long though!!!
In any event, have a look. If you like a particular PSA/Photograph,
download the files.

All in all though,,, I think if we all get a little bit smarter,,, do a little bit less of this and a little bit more of that,,, our #PaleBlueDot will keep on being a nice little dot,,, maybe even better if we work very diligently at it :-)

IMO #FeelTheBern is more than just Bernie Sanders and our current Presidential Campaign,,, so it’s not really politics I think,,, it’s much bigger

Photography IS my life. It is also how I make my living. Getting challenging though. Still, do not think I am complaining, and I LOVE sharing my work with all my new friends out there, but I do need “to keep the lights on”.
So a cup of coffee sounds AOK to me! Cheers, Kevin
